Unlike many of the ignorant 1 and 2 star reviews here, the water is naturally laden with chlorophyll and is NOT polluted. The natural resacas (green waterways) that traverse the zoo are currently being dredged to return them to a more representative (historical) depth. You will find specialities in animals that are appropriate for the sub-tropical climate in Brownsville - rangeland flora and fauna with a few tropical and subtropical species to compliment that focus. It is small by current standards, but the advantage of this is that the top-quality staff here can concentrate on excellent care and maintenance for the impressive animal exhibits. It is very well laid out, accessible even during crowded periods, well-maintained and clean. Having visited over 75 zoos nationally and globally, I can attest to the predominantly positive reviews of this zoo. If you took the time to read this all the way through, I hope you go and have a great relaxing day Oh well, small complaint for such a lovely zoo. I finally found one booth that sold salads, but they said they didn't have any salad ingredients that day. The prices are very reasonable, but there is no healthy food for sale. You aren't allowed to bring any in, so you have to buy what they sell there. The only reason I gave it four stars instead of five is the food. There were benches all over that were in the shade, so even though it was a very hot day, it was so enjoyable to sit in the shade and watch the animals. There is an exhibit where you can feed the giraffes (It was an additional 3.00, and very worth it!) and a walk through butterfly exhibit. They have an excellent collection of extremely endangered animals that are found in very very few zoos. I stayed and talked to him for about half an hour and named him Wiggle Waggle. He stopped wiggling them whenever I was quiet. The bear picture I'm attaching is a Sun Bear that sat by the edge of the moat watching me, and wiggle-waggled his back feet at me whenever I would talk to him. The animals look very engaged with their environment and seemed to be very interested in watching the people. (The King Vulture was my favorite.there was a very brief rain and afterward he flew to a perch right next to me and sat there with his wings spread out to dry them.amazing and beautiful) The enclosures are largely very open.big islands surrounded by moats. I sat by the aviary and read my book for about an hour while I got to watch and listen to the birds. I spent about 5 hours there, just meandering around, going back to my favorite animals several times. Its a fairly small zoo, I believe you could take your time walking through it and see everything in 2 hours or so. I was in Brownsville for a sports tournament and was looking for something to do for an afternoon and am SO GLAD I found the Gladys Porter Zoo.
